Niko Alexander Karim-Strang

I am a 22-year-old artist from Berkeley, California, and recently graduated from the College Creative Studies (CCS) within UC Santa Barbara. I am primarily an oil painter, but have experience with many other mediums, such as acrylic, watercolor, spray paint/graffiti, digital art, large-scale murals, and am beginning to explore the world textile work, and sculpture.

I pride myself upon a wide subject matter depicted in my art, including portraiture, landscapes, cityscapes, abstract, still life, plein air studies. Most recently, I have focused on merging the worlds of art and basketball, seeking to document, depict and mythologize the game. My goal is to do for basketball what artists like Van Eyck, Michelangelo, and Rafael did for Christianity — Giving life to the world of hoops the same way that artists of the past gave life to the stories of the Bible.

When I paint, the world around me vanishes— it feels as though it is just me and the canvas. Hours feel like minutes and I fall head first into my work.
