Stylistically inspired by John Singer Sargent portraits, this piece captures a woman (Mariah the Scientist), communicating with a lover through a jail phone. Sargent is famous for his rough, unblended painting technique, a style that has pulled me in and one that I have fallen in love with and hope to incorporate into my own art. I feel like I was successful in using a rougher style, but not in replicating or paying true homage to the great sergeant. As I fall deeper into this Sargent rabbit hole I expect to improve and possibly even master the Sargent paint handling.
