In the wake of the murder of George Floyd I began to feel hopeless and honestly really heartbroken about the state of this world. I turned to the one thing I could, my art. In the days following the initial mass protests I began to paint this piece. I felt like it was my responsibility to use my platform as an artist to do SOMETHING.
I wanted to capture the spirit of the movement as best I could. The anger, the exhaustion, but also the love, the leadership, the massive support. There are three individuals, standing, leading, inspiring the rest to take action and come together in this long fight against hate and oppression. The color pallet was almost all the same shades for each subject whether that be the people the buildings or the smoke. This was a really interesting detail to me because it takes the individuality away from any one thing and forces you to pay attention to everything at once.
